From the very beginning
A.M. Matte – Arianne Maxine to her friends – has made up stories since she’s known how to write and created theatrics since she’s known how to speak. With her little brother, she produced play after play in the living room for her parents.
First published at age 11, and first produced at age 9, award-winning author A.M. Matte is a short story writer, a playwright and a poet. Laureate of the O’Neill-Karch award, she hosts conferences and conducts writing workshops for children and for adults, in English and in French.
A career spanning 30 years
A.M. Matte is a trained journalist, but her passion remains theatre and literature. In addition to co-founding Productions Nemesis, a bilingual theatre company based in Ontario, she writes and directs a wide range of projects. Over twenty of her plays have been staged in Ottawa, Toronto, North Bay, the Muskokas and Moncton.
A.M. Matte is a self-taught lyricist and composer who, with the help of composition software and despite her hearing disability, has written two musicals – one staged in Ottawa and the other in Toronto – and more than a dozen pop, jazz, and country songs in English and French.
A.M. Matte holds a certificate in Creative Writing from the University of Toronto as well as a Bachelor of Journalism and a Masters in Communications. She has published two short story books, Where Pigeons Roost and other stories and Ce que l’on divulgue, with other short stories published in literary magazines Virages, Ancrages, Luna Station Quarterly and the science-fiction anthology North of Infinity II. Her work is supported by the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
